3 days down, 17 to go...for digging anyway
That's right, three days of digging are done. And I got to say that I feel like it's going pretty well. Today, we had us a sarcophagus raising. It was pretty exciting, I got pictures (as did everyone else on the site). It was lifted out to see what's underneath it. And you could see bones and nails right away. It'll be interesting to see what that group finds. Our group made some more progress on our square. We found more bones (another animal jawbone, but a different type of animal). The big find for us was looking for the wall of the atrium, and digging from the side and in since we were low enough. And we didn't only find the wall did continue out...but we also found a column. So that means we're on track. We still don't know about the diagonal wall yet, we're working on digging around it. There is a possibility that it's a floating wall (only a couple layers, but not all the way to the bottom), but we'll find out soon enough. We seem to have things worked out pretty well in our group, to keep things flowing. Carry the buckets of dirt can get pretty tired, since you have to spend most of the time in the sun, but that's why we shift who does what. And Israel is humid, although many people told me that it wasn't. It's so nice to come back down and make the long trip to open the door, and BAM! beautiful air conditioning. From time to time there is a nice breeze outside, and as a matter of fact there is one right now as I'm sitting next to the Sea of Galilee. It's beautiful.
Pottery washing begins soon though, but I think I'm going to give another attempt at posting pictures.
